Jasper

For Canadian Thanksgiving I rented a car and headed out to Jasper - not as close as I thought... But it was a beautiful drive with the fall colours and the roads were empty

Heh. When I was living in Nova Scotia as a kid, I had a friend who had relatives visiting from Britain who were hoping to "drive to the Rockies" for either the afternoon, or perhaps the weekend if they were too far for an afternoon trip. :)

Yes - I think British people find it difficult to understand the concept that a country can be so big it takes a week to drive across..... Interestingly though Canadians have told me that British people tend to consider 'within walking distance' to cover a much wider area than Candians - perhaps something to do with a mild climate where walking is a year round travel option

There's a scene at the opening of the animated British film When the Wind Blows that shows Jim Blogg (ironically named, now) wandering home from where the bus drops him off. It looked to me like he was wandering half way across Yorkshire or something. I though, cripes, why don't he call a cab to catch the bus? :)
